Your visual field encompasses the entire area your eye can see while fixated on a central point. Through visual field testing, your optometrist gauges the extent of vision in each eye, aiding in the detection of any potential vision loss you may be experiencing. Some professions such as Police Officers, Firefighters, Pilots and The Ministry of Transportation may require Visual Field Testing as part of their application process.

How does it work?

The test involves a central fixation light and blinking test lights that are visible in your peripheral vision. You’ll be prompted to press a button each time you notice a blinking light. The effectiveness of your visual field is assessed by your ability to detect dim blinking lights across different areas of your peripheral vision. Following the test, your optometrist will generate a map revealing the location of any blind spots in your eyes.

Who needs it?

If you’ve been diagnosed with an ocular condition or disease that elevates the risk of retinal nerve damage or vision loss. Additionally, individuals diagnosed with health conditions such as hyperthyroidism, multiple sclerosis, pituitary gland disorders, stroke, brain tumor, diabetes, and hypertension should consider visual field testing, as these conditions can lead to sight-threatening ocular issues.
